Gong came together in the late '60's by the Australian guitarist David Allen. The band created a mythology of the peaceful Planet Gong populated by Radio Gnomes, Pothead Pixies, and Octave Doctors.
Rolling Stone magazine described Gong's music as combining "psychedelic English whimsy, German kosmische space jams and Gallic libertine fusion".

The musical mayhem is accompanied by fairly strong, uncompromising anarchistic rhetoric, which at times sounds like a bit of a put on . . . but then you realise that they are quite genuine in their beliefs."
